The scholarship provides $40,000 for students who will pursue, or are currently enrolled in, a master's or PhD degree in a STEM discipline at any U.S. university. Citizens or legal permanent residents of Australia, India, Japan, the United States, or any ASEAN country (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, or Vietnam) who will be enrolled in a graduate program in fall 2024 are eligible to apply.

What They're Looking For

The scholarship is awarded to students who portray 1) Academic excellence in a STEM field, 2) Passion for the intersection of STEM and social impact, 3) Capacity to bridge differences between people, 4) Orientation towards results, and 5) Innovation and creativity.

Undergraduate students are encouraged to submit drafts of their Quad Fellowship application well in advance of the priority deadline to receive feedback from us. Attach your scholarship application materials in an email, along with a few potential meeting times no earlier than 2 business days after your submission to receive feedback. We are willing to work with students through numerous revisions. Current graduate students should reach out to the Office of External Fellowships in the Graduate College for guidance.

Quad Fellowship Information Session

February 13, 2025 from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. in 514 IUB.

March 3, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. (noon)

The Quad Fellowship does not formally require a university endorsement process. Thus, an applicant may choose to independently submit application materials. However, if Illinois undergraduates are interested in obtaining feedback on your Quad Fellowship application from a campus committee, then you need to submit materials by this deadline. University faculty and staff who are familiar with the award will review materials received by this date. If materials are submitted late, only the National and International Scholarships program will provide feedback.

Required information includes:

  1. A signed Scholarship Waiver (either scanned or in hardcopy).
  2. Statement of Purpose and two short essays requested by the Quad Fellowship.
  3. A 2-page resumé.

Optional information includes three letters of recommendation that address how you fit the criteria of a Quad Fellow. Letters should be sent as attachments directly to us at topscholars@illinois.edu.

April 1, 2024, by 4:00 pm

A complete Quad Fellowship application must be submitted online by this date. We would appreciate a copy of all materials prior to submission.

The Quad Fellowship will review and rank top applicants from the pool and invite finalists for an interview.
